Story

Mahendra Agarwal (Rajkummar Rao) aspires to join the Indian cricket team but ends up working in his family business after failing to make the cut. His parents arrange his marriage to Mahima (Janhvi Kapoor), a doctor who shares his passion for cricket. Mahendra dreams of achieving his cricketing ambitions with Mahima's support. Will she help him pursue his dreams? How will their families react? Discover the answers in Mr & Mrs Mahi.

Plus Points

Rajkummar Rao delivers a stellar performance, embodying the nuances of hope, frustration, and ambition. His acting prowess shines through, reaffirming his status as a top-tier actor.

Janhvi Kapoor gives a sincere performance, and her efforts to master cricket are evident.

Kumud Mishra and Rajesh Sharma provide solid support in their roles as Mahendra’s father and coach, respectively.

Minus Points

The marketing campaign, while extensive, gave away too much in the trailer, diminishing the impact of the theatrical experience. It felt like unwrapping a present you already knew the contents of.

The plot lacks originality and surprise, making it feel predictable and drawn-out. Instead of the thrill of a T20 match, the movie drags like a slow-paced test match, challenging even the most patient viewers.

The cricket sequences fail to capture the excitement of the sport, blending into the family drama without distinction. This lack of clear focus, coupled with an overly long runtime, makes the film feel more like an endurance test than entertainment.

The soundtrack offers brief moments of relief, but the background score fails to enhance the film’s emotional peaks. Numerous production errors further detract from the overall experience.

Technical Aspects

Despite a promising concept, the execution falls short. A more refined screenplay by Sharan Sharma could have salvaged the film, but missed opportunities are evident throughout.

John Stewart Eduri’s score fails to elevate the pivotal moments, and Anay Goswamy’s cinematography does not capture the dynamic energy needed for a sports drama.

Nitin Baid’s editing is sluggish, impacting the film’s pacing. However, the production values are adequate.

Verdict

Overall, Mr & Mrs Mahi misses the mark, failing to deliver the excitement of a sports drama or the heartwarming elements of a family story. Rajkummar Rao stands out, but the film as a whole feels like a tedious endurance test. Skip it and look forward to the T20 World Cup 2024 for real excitement.
